Meredith Good

The Girl, Sea, and Moon

She rests on a damp, moss-covered rock
Staring out at the dark, soulless waters and beyond
The crashing of the waves cannot silence her unspoken thoughts
An onlooker drifting further away
Great blue herons swoop and dive
A dream begins and soon dies
Her hair plasters to her face
Sea mist creates droplets of sorrow on her body
Her sweater frayed and worn dances in the wind
She hugs her knees close, remembering what it was like to be held
She runs her nails across her arm: a spider web of lies
Scars ripple and waltz across her body
Wishing to be a star: alone yet always admired
Truth and hope slipping through fingers
Withdrawals and falling deeper
It must be different tomorrow
It will be better
But tonight she is only just a girl
Sitting by the sea taking comfort in the moon’s acceptance

Meredith Good is a freshman at the University of Toledo. She is pursuing an English Literature degree with hopes of going into law or teaching. Her poetry has not been previously published, so she is very grateful. She loves to read, go on hikes with her mom, and cuddle with her cat in her free time.
