Meredith Good

Girlhood

Splashing in puddles with yellow rain boots
Tangled hair filled with brambles
Jumping with no hesitation
Splitting oranges with friends
A world brimming with ribbons, bows, and frills
Watching the years bleed into each other
Blowing out more and more candles
A crown placed ever so gently on your head
Telling you of your importance, your talent
Silence and misunderstanding
A distance is soon created; one you had not intended
A breaking of bonds
Fits of rage, your emotions lawless and rampant
Slamming of doors
Hands that once folded in prayer now hold fists
Biting your tongue, so full of unspoken words
Burying your shame
Bottling your opinions
Trying and failing to prove your worth
Young love ending in a shattering of trust and faith
Joy riding in cars with windblown hair
Drinking till your head is drowning in bubbles
Makeup to hide the imperfections you had never noticed
Missing your gap-toothed smile
Squeezing into your favorite dress
Makeshift funerals in the backyard
Reminiscing the loss of childhood
Not yet an adult, no longer a kid
Cracked nail polish and crushed dreams
Your softness is a weakness
Your boldness is unsettling
Fitting in or standing out; neither is correct
Saying goodbyes
A chasm in your heart begging to be filled
A piece of your soul lost
Gone, but not forgotten
You store this past deep inside
This past of broken friendships, shredded poems, cracked mirrors
Remembering and yet always moving forward
