“El Sueño” (La Cama)
—artwork by Frida Kahlo
A blanket of indigo clouds.
Vines running through my body,
roots at the feet holding onto the bed frame.
Lying down dreaming of tomorrow,
vines running through my body,
death is lying awake in the top bunk with eyes wide open,
lying down dreaming of tomorrow,
and if I stare at death’s pitch-black eyes,
Death is lying awake in the top bunk with eyes wide open.
I can feel the coldness, the void, and the stiffness of the bones.
And if I stare at death’s pitch-black eyes,
pale white holding a bouquet of purple flowers as the only protection.
I can feel the coldness, the void, and the stiffness of the bones.
A blanket of indigo clouds.
Pale white holding a bouquet of purple flowers as the only protection,
as the only gift from the earth.
